Building a Bridge
“Can fasting really become a force?”
From a conventional perspective, the answer is a clear no—it seems impossible, with not even a sliver of a chance.
Yet in truth, fasting embodies a force rooted in nature. It has long been quietly brewing. This force requires time, immense patience, and above all, a committed group of practitioners who remain steadfast in their beliefs and domain.
Why must fasting become a force?
Because future generations need to receive this energy—a form of hope, a hope that could elevate the baseline of public health.
If your persistence enables thousands to learn a body-centered approach to health, and through community networks tens of thousands more begin to see health from a new perspective, then surely, you would give your all toward that goal.
I first encountered fasting during the rise of the internet—an era that, to me, felt like a signal of the times, a reminder that the moment had come to fight for the restoration of human health.
Taiwan has the right timing and geographic advantage for this endeavor. What’s lacking is people—the human connection. That’s why all fasting companions who care deeply about this land should come together and work collectively for this unfinished mission.
In the winter of 2013, I traveled to Qingdao to teach a fasting workshop. At the time, a passionate group of learners in Taipei was already enthusiastically sharing their fasting experiences. Incidentally, Line’s group chat feature had just begun gaining popularity.
I clearly remember that one afternoon after the workshop, I sat in the home of a Taiwanese participant in Qingdao. With a mixture of unfamiliarity and excitement, I created my first health group chat. I posted the first “Health Tip” and officially promised the Taipei participants that I would share related content daily from that point on.
That group became the key to awakening my own body awareness. There was a powerful, organic dynamic of sharing among them—a positive cycle of mutual inspiration and healthy competition. Each new workshop attracted waves of new participants.
They were part of the movement when I published Health: A Path of Returning to Simplicity at the end of 2014. But by the time I released The First Fast in 2016, many were no longer present—only Chen Jianzhong continued to walk by my side.
Two major factors caused this separation. At the time, I was juggling roles as both a corporate trainer and business promoter. The company I was affiliated with had a performance-based incentive system. Human nature, always swaying between profit and pride, played its part. I witnessed conflicts among executives over benefits and saw my own students drift from the original intention of cherishing the body.
That experience gave me a profound realization: any action claimed to be altruistic becomes tainted the moment profit is introduced—it can no longer remain pure at its core.
These events shaped my future path. I knew I had to continue speaking out for fasting education while reminding myself not to repeat serious misjudgments. Still, each mistake I made often stemmed from miscalculations related to interests and exchanges. Ironically, those missteps became the very nutrients that nourished my convictions.
Eventually, I transitioned into independent teaching. By the end of 2018, I had accumulated twelve years of experience, and nearly six more years of persistent solo effort had followed.
I don’t know where this resolve came from. This path has been guided not only by providence but also by the support of many angel-like companions who journeyed alongside me. Their presence brought countless insights and awakenings.
To promote fasting, I have spared no cost and asked for no return—driven solely by a vision in my heart: that one day, I can pass the torch with fulfillment, confident that this undertaking will continue to grow and be inherited by future generations.
Back then, the dynamics of cliques played out vividly before my eyes. Like a drop of ink clouding a glass of clear water, the contamination began with my strict expectations of participants’ attitudes and boundaries.
Why is the location of intention so crucial? Why is starting from the heart so essential? History had long answered that for me.
This journey of hand-in-hand guidance exposed me to the full spectrum of human nature. For me, it’s an unending path of learning.
Because of that, I’ve come to deeply understand both the goodness and the weaknesses of the Taiwanese spirit. That understanding reinforces my determination to “lay the soil” for this project—because I believe that those destined to encounter fasting are simply waiting for the right moment to do so.
This is not a solo endeavor; it is a collective project. If you’ve learned and then choose to keep your knowledge behind closed doors, you are not a builder of this bridge.
What we are engaged in is a bridge-building initiative. Every city needs an architect who holds the line. Beyond the six major cities, the other thirteen counties await dedicated guardians to cultivate and sow the seeds.
Whenever we encounter someone who knows nothing about fasting but is brimming with curiosity, it’s a golden opportunity to share the wisdom of the body. This is a road of action—not theoretical debate. If you’re willing to speak, there’s a chance to transform someone’s view on health.
The true starting point of knowledge is curiosity—not the content of knowledge itself. Fasting, more than a skill, is an attitude. I track the attitude behind health practices, and the best ones are almost always rooted in curiosity. Without it, experience tells me—we will simply walk separate paths.
It is my sincere hope that this bridge will one day be completed. Every engineer who contributes to its construction will be remembered on the monument of the future. And thousands of people will, through their daily lives free from illness, master the habit of pausing digestion.
