A Journey Through the Way of the Body
Joining a group tour abroad, when the guide passionately explains the history of a famous landmark, some people listen intently, others chat casually, and still others wander aimlessly. Some travelers do their homework before departure, some simply seek relaxation, while others only wish to please their family. Such are the differences in motivation.
In consultations with students, they may remember only the words we exchanged, but they would not realize that I also observe something else: their gaze, their attitude, and the position and intensity of the motivation behind their questions.
Some ignite their fighting spirit because of illness. Some, having early realized the impotence of medicine, adjust their perspective on health in advance. Some, foreseeing the loss of dignity awaiting them in the future, prepare ahead of time, determined to resist.
Once these motivations mature, the willpower that radiates from their eyes is deeply moving. Their presence is always active and resolute, with no retreat. The world outside is never short of such people, merely waiting for that moment when God winks at them, and they gather their belongings, ready to embark on a new journey.
When motivation falls into place, learning leads them back to dialogue with the body. For the “Way of the Body” is a road only one can walk oneself: one’s own steps, one’s own pack, entrusted to no one else.
By sheer momentum, I became a guide on this road. I gladly lead those willing to set forth, seeing their realizations in their smiles, and reading their wisdom in their resolve. Some are curious, some are hesitant, and some finally muster the courage to join the procession. As long as the group is aligned and faith is firm, no one will stray. Those who cherish themselves will eventually enter.
For twenty years, I have walked this road, and for twenty years I have guided others. The greatest lesson I have learned is that nothing can be forced. Those without motivation or courage will remain on the sidelines, or even turn to criticism and scorn.
The Way of the Body is like group travel: one must prepare before departure, follow guidance along the way, neither stray from the group nor invite companions who are merely there to kill time. Perhaps you too have had the experience of travel disrupted by fellow group members: the aunt who complains endlessly, the companion always late, or the old man who daily sneaks out hotel breakfasts.
To know one’s body requires strict discernment as well. This most direct of pathways is collectively ignored by humankind. Those who walk it come to see through human ignorance, and eventually the deceptions it sustains.
Walking into a forest, breathing fresh air, feeling the vitality and positive energy, one cannot help but wonder: is this the forgotten sanctuary of human health? Insects, birds, squirrels, and towering trees together form a great cycle of life, but let us not forget—the true foundation lies deep in the soil, in countless single-celled organisms invisible to the eye.
“Fresh air, pure water, and abundant food all come from the forest. Nature’s giving and receiving is the silent pact of balance it keeps, and it necessarily contains immense wisdom.” —Suzanne Simard, Finding the Mother Tree.
The Amazon rainforest is called the “lungs of the Earth,” for its climate-regulating function is irreplaceable, and its biodiversity unmatched. Nature constantly reminds humanity to respect its laws, for within them resides that invisible force of balance.
Warnings from scientists echo: “nature’s backlash,” “extreme climate.” But reminders are hardly necessary—we already feel these disruptions in our own lives. Those walking the Way of the Body sense it even more keenly, for the human body is a microcosm of nature, and its backlash is already overwhelming us.
The body is like the Amazon: inexhaustible in resources, endless in lessons, infinite in pathways. Yet humans crowd into clinics seeking chemical remedies, mistaking their defiance of nature for the gate to health.
From the body’s perspective, the medical ecosystem reveals itself as a “decline of wisdom.” I cannot help but ask: are humans truly this ignorant? What has clouded their eyes?
If only one answer can be given, I would sum it up in a single word: greed. We crave more, we crave speed, and so we have misunderstood money, and misunderstood time.
We ceaselessly pour unnatural substances into our bodies, yet discard the wisdom and gifts inherent within. To abandon the achievements of evolution for greed is nothing short of utter folly.
Thus, more and more gather as bystanders, unable to see where our procession leads. They speculate, preferring to gamble recklessly with the “extreme climate” of their own bodies, hoping that their inner nature will not strike back.
At the head of the procession, I understand their stubbornness, and I sympathize with why they cannot escape the fortress built by medicine. Our eyes do not meet, and our lives may only brush briefly in passing.
Without walking this path, one cannot experience the body’s brilliance. Without probing deeply, one cannot step onto it. Without curiosity, there is no chance for inquiry.
The Way of the Body has always offered a shortcut between us and ourselves: to converse with the body, which is the most direct path to converse with the self.
Your own matters, your own path, your own body, your own life, your own health.
Only by walking the Way of the Body can one experience autonomy, independence, and the truth that everything must be shouldered by oneself.
So it is with life itself: a journey that no one else can complete for you.
