Have You Heard the Call of Responsibility?
Before I turned fifty, my life could be summed up in one phrase: stumbling and struggling. After fifty, it felt as if another person was living my life—steady and grounded.
If I were to calculate the return on investment of my earlier years, the numbers would never add up. But life is uncompromising; there is no room for negotiation. After a long and arduous journey, I suddenly realized the destiny I was meant to fulfill.
To be able to align my abilities with my passion, and devote them to a cause worthy of a lifetime of dedication—there are no words to describe such fortune. This sense of belonging is not only about career direction, but also about health. Through fasting, I regained the strength of my body, and through fasting, I established my life’s calling.
Looking back, I have walked this path for nearly twenty years. As my dialogue with my body deepened, I was struck by the realization: in Taiwan, there remain only a handful of us still guiding the way of the body. It is a heavy responsibility and a long road ahead. And I have always known: this is not just about our generation, but a compass of well-being for generations to come.
—
Ten years ago, I followed an American fasting coach online. I not only watched his videos but also studied in detail how his wellness center organized fasting retreats.
Their core program was water fasting, requiring every participant to remain in the retreat center for three full weeks. I was deeply curious: why were people willing to commit so much time and money? More than that, I wondered—how did this coach manage such a high-standard wellness center? How did he inspire clear motivation and willingness to learn among his followers?
I am convinced he understood fasting profoundly and had completely surrendered to the way of the body. Even from afar, I felt deep admiration for him.
In contrast, fasting in Taiwan is simpler. We do not need such large-scale retreats. Yet I am equally convinced that living alongside participants for three weeks can generate an extraordinary sense of unity.
I often recall the early two-day, one-night retreats we hosted. And I know clearly: as we kept streamlining the format, what we lost were the opportunities for profound feeling and heartfelt connection.
—
Students often ask: “Why should we keep attending classes? Why should we join these gatherings?”
My answer is simple: as a coach, I myself am still learning and growing. How could you think you no longer need to learn?
I have come to realize: what sets humans apart from beasts is our capacity for reflection. Yet humanity often loses humility in its arrogance over other creatures. Fasting offers a return to humility.
If you understand fasting yet do not understand humility, your learning is only superficial. If you surrender to the body’s natural laws yet still cling to arrogance, you have missed the essence of the practice. Fasting reveals how we defy nature, and it awakens us to the unhealthy attitudes embedded in our daily lives.
After nearly twenty years of records, I am certain: this is a sacred journey. Out of gratitude, reverence, and the undeniable call of responsibility, nothing in my life matters more than fulfilling the role of a fasting coach.
—
Strictly speaking, every person in life will hear different calls. Sometimes it is a professional task entrusted to you, sometimes a revelation through illness. The one who calls you is not another person—it is Heaven itself.
At times, I have crawled forward. At times, I have leapt in progress. But whenever I lift my head, I hear that voice of responsibility. Even in the depths of hardship or defeat, it is this voice—again and again—that pushes me onward.
Those who deepen their fasting often come to realize the peculiar serendipity of life: they see how fortunate they are, and feel the weight of responsibility to do something with that gift.
Through fasting, we each leave behind our own health stories. But these stories must move others. They must be ready to help someone at the right moment. The true wonder lies in the experience: without walking the path, there is no story; without a story, there is no enduring force to continue.
Someone, somewhere, is waiting for your call. And when they hear it, they too will receive their summons from life.
—
From a novice in fasting to one who now shoulders life’s calling, I have learned everything only by carrying the responsibility first, then looking back—realizing, one by one, that each conversation, each turning point, had been arranged as guidance along the way.
Having received Heaven’s comfort and healing, how could I accept without giving back?
I know my story will one day serve as a textbook for many to change their lives. And in the future, the book The Great Healing will surely gather the wellness stories of our community of fasting pioneers, leaving a testimony for those who come after us.
